IN welcome news, Queensland selectors have reverted to form with the pick of Pete Flanagan to play for the Supremes.
Flanas can play in any position on the park. Since 1986 he has toiled in public law, commercial law, energy law and as counsel in public inquiries. In his youth he helped prosecute major fraud cases for the Feds.
Selectors were prepared to overlook the fact that in 2013 Flanas was counsel assisting an inquiry headed by retired Supreme and public enemy Richard (Let-The-Man-Have-a-Drink) Chesterman.
Late in 2013 Chestie came out of retirement to support the leaderless Supremes during their tough encounter with the Executives.
The Executives ruthless captain, Can Do Newman, tagged Chestie and other rule of law types "apologists for paedophiles and rapists".
Chestie recovered from this ugly high shot. When last heard from, he was living in exile in London, sending letters to the editor of The Bowen Hills Bugle and supporting warlords like Sofronoff, Fitzgerald and Muir over the controversial selection of Tim (Errors) Carmody to be the next CJ of Queensland.
Flanas' 2013 assistance to the now-exiled Chestie was not enough to have him jailed under Queensland's anti-association laws.
On Thursday religious leader and alleged Attorney General Jarrod (Dead-in-the-Water) Bleijie was full of praise for Flanas. Dead-in-the-Water oozed:
"I would like to congratulate Mr Flanagan on his appointment and wish him well in his new role in delivering justice to Queensland families, commencing 27 June 2014."
Pedants were left wondering why Jarrod's wishes did not extend to Flanas delivering justice to mining companies, environmentalists, harmless single people, cops, criminals and other non-families who turn up at the Queen Elizabeth II Justice Depot in George Street.
Flanas' selection on form and proven ability makes Queensland selectors' choice of Errors Carmody in the pivotal role of captain all the more perplexing.
Errors earned that name with a series of horrible mistakes during a five-year stint in the Family division. He returned to the judicial game as Chief Beak, but again was found wanting in the law department.
Justice Margaret Wilson of the Supremes had to correct his grammar in one celebrated case.
Other Supremes questioned Timbo's grasp of the law.
Also, the Judicial Conference of Australia exquisitely chimed in that, "Some of the language used by Judge Carmody is not familiar" - in the context of a discussion of the doctrine of the separation of powers and the principle of judicial independence.
Despite these problems with law and language, and his admission that he did not have the ball skills to be expected of a Supreme, Errors was chosen to captain the team.
As we go to print there is still no news about Errors' concussion. The Queensland Police Union publicly wished him a speedy recovery and sent flowers.
Nurses in the concussion ward at Royal Brisbane Hospital reported the absence of get well cards or bouquets from The Bar Union or the Conveyancers Club.
With only days until Errors is due to take on the captain's spot of the QEII Cauldron, supporters are wondering whether Queensland selectors reluctantly will tell Errors to get more rest.
It would be a shame if the talented, young Flanas had to help the team carry an injured Errors around the park.
Should Flanas be expected to do such heavy lifting on debut?
